The intention of this creation, is
to teach the visual art of recognizing the structure of cells and tissues and
understanding how this is determined by their function.
The vocabulary used in medicine is based to a great extent
on words derived from the Latin and Greek languages. The study of the meaning
of the words is named etymology and we will use it a lot.
The word "histology"
came from the Greek "histo-" meaning tissue + "logos",
treatise.

Histology"
is organized in general into four types of tissue: (1) epithelium, (2) connective tissue
(includes cartilage, bone and blood), (3) muscle, and (4) nervous tissue.
Organs are composed of more than one
type of tissue and the cells located there have specialized functions.
Because of the high cost of
purchasing of microscopes and preparing or purchasing slide collections, today
most University’s are changing to Digital Histology using systems like Aperio,
among others.
